Dear Class of 2006,

In honor of our classmate Malavika Vijay, who passed away in India on June 29th, a memorial service has been planned for this Tuesday evening, August 15. The event will take place in front of the school and will include the dedication of a bench and a candlelight ceremony. A casual potluck picnic will precede the event as a chance to relax and celebrate a beloved member of our community.

Plan to meet in the millennium courtyard at 7:00 pm for the picnic, and, if possible, please bring a dish/side/dessert for 3-6 people or a 2-L bottle of soda to share. Also, feel free to bring a frisbee, guitar, etc., as we will be waiting until dusk to begin the ceremony. If you wish to come just for the ceremony, please arrive no later than 8 pm. Whether you were a close friend of Malavika's, or simply an acquaintance, please take this opportunity to gather as a class in memory.

If you can make it, please reply to this message with the subject line "attending" by Sunday, August 13. For those of you interested in making a speech (You are welcome to!) or donating photos to a picture collage, please contact Swathi Manchikanti at swathim123 at gmail dot com. If you would like to get involved with the organization of this event, please contact Sarah Davis at sarahdavis88 at gmail dot com .

Feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns. Also, since this is very last-minute, try to get the word out to as many people as possible!

We hope to see you there.

July 16th, 2006 - We will be developing the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology Class of 2006 Alumni Class Page over the next few months. We hope to introduce numerous ways of staying in touch via this website. VgS is currently producing designs for a new layout, discussion boards, contact information databases, photo galleries, social groups, calendars, and more.

But it takes all of our participation! Each one of us is important to the whole. Remember to stay in touch, and once everything is operational, please spread the word and enjoy the fun. And of course, come to the class reunions and other activities!

July 7th, 2006 - Just a few weeks ago, we were celebrating a new beginning and gazing into the bright futures of our lives. But we, as a class, must now face a painful loss together. We have lost a wonderful friend who has experienced our joys and shared our memories of the years that have passed. We will always remember, especially during these times of sorrow, the common bond all of us have forged over the past four years. We will always be together.

Dear Class of 2006,

It is my deepest regret to inform you that we have lost one of our classmates.

Malavika Vijay was traveling following graduation with her family. She was in Delhi in Northern India on the way to the Vaishvani Temple on Wednesday when the bus they were riding in was involved in an accident. Malavika was killed instantly. Her father, sister, and grandmother also died in the crash.

Malavika was 18 years old and was heading to Washington University in the fall. Her sister was in the 8th grade at Irving Middle School.

The news is shocking as we consider that just two weeks ago we were all sitting together at graduation. It is painful to bear, and reminds us all of how precious life is.

Details are slowing coming out of India, and will be passed on to you as soon as we receive them. As soon as any information about a memorial service is known we will let you know.

At times like this, let us be there to comfort our classmates, and relive the fond memories of a friend we have lost.

Sincerely,
Jonathan Nussbaum
